Coming back for a 4th instalment, the Lisa Tan x Coast collaboration puts occasion headwear in the spotlight once again.

Perfect for the races, weddings and any special occasions where you want to be noticed, this bold collection fuses Lisa Tan’s sculptural designs and Coast’s timeless silhouettes.

To mark the launch of this exciting collection we sat down with Tan and Oliver McGown, Coast's Head of Design, to learn more about the inspiration behind the pieces and what makes them so special.

The Art Of Millinery

"The in-house print designers were inspired by an artist palette in their studio, so I really wanted to design millinery that would complement them and make them sing, I wanted to take these notions and infuse them into the hats. I’ve employed a lot more texture in this collection to reflect the feel of a painted canvas; lots of veiling, and different kinds of feathers, some of which have been trimmed and positioned to almost mimic brushstrokes. These trims provide beautiful textures while also maintaining a lightness, which is an incredibly important quality in millinery" - Lisa

The Science Of Colour

"Outfits have been meticulously designed by our team so that garments and hats compliment each other seamlessly from balance of proportions to colour harmony. We paired unexpected colour combinations with powerful prints, playing with a bright palette of sunset oranges, cornflower blues, citrus greens, and ultra-feminine pinks" - Oliver

The Power Of Prints

"Some of the most impactful prints in this collection were created by digitally warping traditional floral prints, creating new and modern placements on the garment and on the body to create flattering silhouettes. The warped technique is also used with stripes that are manipulated to create optical illusions on the body to emphasise the proportions of the female form. These prints are then elevated by dramatic, statement designs" - Oliver

And Off To The Races

"Horseracing plays a huge part in my design process. The very first hats I designed were made to be worn to the races, and ever since then, each time I design a new hat, my mind automatically drifts to thinking about which race meeting it could be worn to. That's not to say my hats are only suitable for the races, however they are definitely designed for special occasions where you’ll want to stand out and be noticed" - Lisa
